Patrice Lumumba was the Democratic Republic of Congo's first democratically elected Prime Minister following independence in June 1960. He was removed from power within months, and assassinated in Katanga province in January 1961 — an event that remains one of the defining, contested moments in African and Cold War history, and one that Belgium and the United States have each, in different ways, formally acknowledged a role in.
We built this tour because we believe that history should be visited, not just read about — and that it should be told by Congolese guides, drawing on Congolese historical scholarship, rather than filtered through a foreign lens. This is a memorial visit, not a spectacle: expect a measured, factual, and reflective day, led by guides trained in the history and its documented sources.
The tour departs from Lubumbashi (accessible by direct flight or as an add-on to your Kolwezi trip) and combines the memorial visit with a walking tour of Lubumbashi's own colonial and independence-era heritage architecture.
Itinerary
Lubumbashi city heritage walk
Start with a guided walk through Lubumbashi's historic centre — Belgian colonial-era administrative buildings, the old railway station, and the National Museum of Lubumbashi, where a curator-led exhibit provides essential context on the Congo Crisis of 1960–65 before you visit the memorial itself.
The memorial visit
A quiet, guided visit to the site honouring Patrice Lumumba. Your guide presents the documented historical timeline — his role in independence, the political crisis that followed, and the events of January 1961 — drawing on Congolese, Belgian and UN historical records. Time is built in for quiet reflection.
Independence history discussion & return
Lunch at a local restaurant (own account) followed by an optional guided discussion on how Lumumba's legacy is remembered in Congo today, including his 2002 formal apology from Belgium and ongoing conversations about a full accounting of the events. Return to your Lubumbashi hotel or connecting flight by late afternoon.

We designed it specifically to avoid that framing. This is presented as a heritage and independence history tour, led by trained guides working from documented historical sources, with the pacing and tone of a memorial visit rather than a sightseeing stop. We regularly review guest feedback to keep it that way.
Can I combine this with my Kolwezi trip?
Yes. Most guests fly Kolwezi–Lubumbashi (roughly 45 minutes) or arrive via Lubumbashi first. We can arrange this as a stand-alone day or bundle it with any of our other three tours.
Is the history presented balanced?
Our guides work from multiple documented sources, including Congolese historical scholarship, the 2001 Belgian parliamentary commission of inquiry, and declassified records, and are trained to present the established facts and acknowledge where interpretations differ.
