Africa's tallest waterfall, and almost no one to share it with
Upemba and Kundelungu National Parks are two of the largest protected wilderness areas in Central Africa — and two of the least visited anywhere on the continent. Decades of limited access have kept them wild: rolling miombo woodland, dramatic escarpments, and Lofoi Falls, which at roughly 340 metres is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Africa, taller than Victoria Falls.
This is not a big-five safari — it's a wilderness and landscape experience for travellers who want somewhere genuinely off the map. Expect hippo and crocodile along the Lualaba's tributaries, healthy antelope populations, raptors overhead, and, if you're fortunate and quiet, a chance of the park's more elusive residents.
We run this as a small-group, fully-supported expedition: 4x4 transfer from Kolwezi, experienced park-registered rangers, and mobile camping or partner lodges depending on the itinerary you choose.
Sample 4-day itinerary (Kundelungu & Lofoi Falls)
Kolwezi to Kundelungu gate
Early departure by 4x4, scenic drive through the Lualaba valley and Katangese plateau. Afternoon arrival and camp set-up near the park boundary; sundowner at a bush viewpoint.
Lofoi Falls trek
Guided hike to the Lofoi Falls viewpoint — Africa's tallest single-drop waterfall, plunging off the plateau into the valley below. Packed lunch at the falls, wildlife spotting along the plateau grasslands en route.
Plateau wildlife drive & river landscapes
Morning game drive across the Kundelungu plateau, afternoon at the Lualaba tributaries for birdlife and, seasonally, hippo pods. Evening campfire briefing on the park's conservation history.
Return to Kolwezi
Relaxed morning, optional short hike, then drive back to Kolwezi, arriving by early evening. (6-day itineraries add Upemba National Park's wetlands and lake system — ask us for the extended route.)

Frequently asked questions
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness is required — daily hikes of 2–4 hours over uneven terrain, sometimes at altitude on the Kundelungu plateau. Not technical, but not a fully sedentary trip either.
What's the best season to visit?
The dry season, May to September, offers the best road access and wildlife viewing. Lofoi Falls is most dramatic just after the rains (April–May), when flow is highest but access is still manageable.
Is medical evacuation cover really required?
Yes — given the remoteness of both parks, we require proof of travel insurance including medical evacuation before departure. We can recommend providers if needed.
Can this be shortened for a weekend trip?
Yes — expat residents often book a 2-night/3-day Kundelungu-only version. Ask us on WhatsApp for a weekend-friendly itinerary and pricing.
