Ask most travellers to name Africa's most famous waterfall and you'll hear "Victoria Falls" every time. Ask them to name its tallest single, uninterrupted drop, and almost nobody knows the answer: Lofoi Falls, plunging roughly 340 metres off the edge of the Kundelungu plateau in southeastern DR Congo — nearly twice the height of Victoria Falls' main drop.
Why so few people have heard of it
Kundelungu National Park's remoteness has been its blessing and its curse. Limited road infrastructure and decades of restricted access kept visitor numbers close to zero — but it also kept the plateau's miombo woodland, grasslands and river systems remarkably intact. There's no queue, no viewing platform crowd, and no souvenir stalls. Just you, a guide, and one of the tallest waterfalls on the continent.
Getting there
Lofoi Falls sits within Kundelungu National Park, reached by 4x4 from Kolwezi (roughly a half-day drive through the Lualaba valley) or, for a shorter itinerary, from Lubumbashi. The falls viewpoint itself requires a guided hike of a few hours across plateau grassland — moderate difficulty, immensely rewarding.
Best time to see it
Visit just after the rainy season eases, around April–May, for the most dramatic flow, when the plateau is still lush and green. The dry season (May–September) offers easier road access and better wildlife viewing across the wider park, with a slightly reduced but still spectacular flow at the falls.
What else is in Kundelungu
Beyond the falls, the plateau supports healthy antelope populations, raptors, and — for patient, quiet visitors — a chance of the park's more elusive wildlife. Combined with neighbouring Upemba National Park's wetlands and lake systems, this corner of Katanga offers some of Central Africa's most underrated wilderness.
